How it works

Count Chinese characters

Chinese characters are counted apart from punctuation, Latin letters and digits, with words, different words and sentences next to them. The box holds 20,000 characters; pasted text past that is cut off, and the line under the box says so.

Add pinyin to Chinese text

The Reading tab puts each word's dictionary reading above it, and Copy pinyin gives the same pinyin as plain text. A single character takes its most common reading (得 de, 长 cháng), and 地 after a two-character word reads de. Tone sandhi is not marked: 不 and 一 keep their own tones.

Check the HSK level of a text

The vocabulary level is the lowest HSK 3.0 level that covers 95% of the words. Numbers and words built only from HSK words (二十, 每天) count at their highest character's level. It is shown from 20 words up.

Split into words

The split uses a list of 57,615 words and how often each is used, so 研究生命 becomes 研究 + 生命, not 研究生 + 命. Names and words outside the list appear as single characters.

Simplified and traditional

Conversion goes word by word, so 头发 becomes 頭髮 and 出发 becomes 出發. Characters outside known words are converted one by one, and one-to-many characters can come out wrong there. When converting back would not restore the text, the line under the box offers Undo.

Print a reading sheet or word list

Print gives the text as the Reading tab shows it, a word or character list for the HSK levels you pick, or both. Choosing Save as PDF in the print dialog gives a PDF.

The analysis runs in your browser and the text is kept there until you clear it. Opening a less common word asks the server for that one word's meaning.

Print

Shared with the Reading tab, with its text sizes and marks.
